No1 Mistake We All Make When Starting Something New

2 min read

Hi there,

Do you ever get that urge of motivation,

when you’re just so excited, and energized,

feeling ready to do anything.

So you go all in.

On day one.

Only to feel completely drained the next?

It’s a cycle that I experience every time I set a new goal.

But as I learned the hard way,

It’s not optimal.

Years ago, I decided to learn to play the saxophone (yes true story..and failed miserably 😅),

I started out with a burst of motivation,

Spending several hours a day, trying to learn as much as I could.

However, this intense effort quickly lead me to a loss of motivation,

and never wanting to try again.

Making most of my ‘all in effort’ worthless.

Later, I learned, I should have applied a different way of learning.

Now, when I want to learn a new skill I practise several minutes each day.

I keep it fun and light.

And the difference is huge!

At first, it felt as if I wasn’t doing enough.

My progress seemed slow.

But in the long term, I make way more progress!

It's not a matter of intensity.

It’s consistency!

Consistency helps to learn new skills and build new habits,

And when you do something regularly, even for short amounts of time,

it becomes a part of your routine, making it way easier to maintain,

and scale to the desired intensity overtime.

In order to build consistency,

start by setting small, achievable goals,

and increase the intensity only once you’ve built the habit!

Even if it seems too easy, and you’d want to go all in,

Remember, the goal is to:

  1. Build a habit (start with easy, achievable goals)

  2. Increase the intensity (once the habit is established)

  3. Maintain the habit (when you’re satisfied with the intensity)

Don’t forget, it's the consistent, small actions that lead to BIG results.

So, whatever you’re working towards, keep watering your goals with daily efforts, and watch them grow!

"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together." –

Vincent Van Gogh

Keep going, keep growing!

PS. The saxophone is still in our household. And my son is giving it a try. Just for fun :-)
